Kilt Sporrans — Scottish & Irish Styles

When you purchase a kilt, specifically a traditional one, it does not come with pockets. It is a norm to wear the sporran with the kilt to store your small essentials. It is worn at the front of your kilt, usually hung on a chain or maybe a leather strap. Traditionally it was used to keep the coins, keys and other small things in the pocket.

We stock kilt sporran in sealskin, rabbit fur, goat fur skin, and calfskin, in colours including black and white, and some styles come with a thistle badge cantle at the top. Rather than just offering one type of sporran, we have split the range into four levels of formality, so you can pick the right one for the outfit and the occasion, from full ceremonial dress right down to something you'd wear every day.

Which Kilt Sporran For Which Occasion

Full Dress Sporran – This is as formal as it gets. Made with a fur front, either sealskin, rabbit fur, or goat fur, and usually finished with several tassels and a decorative metal cantle, often in a thistle badge style. It pairs well with a Prince Charlie outfit and suits weddings and formal Highland events.

Semi Dress Sporran – Sits comfortably in the middle. It brings together fur and leather, hence it is a bit less formal than your full dress but still ideal for ceilidhs, and graduation events. It is best suited when you wear this with an Argyll or tweed outfit and usually for less formal occasions, weddings and Highland games.  

Leather Sporran – Our leather sporran styles are the most casual and practical choice we sell. Made from calfskin, kept simple with minimal or no tassels. Good for daily wear, casual kilt outfits, and business-casual looks where you don't need anything to dress up.

Horse Hair Sporran – Our horse hair sporran is a bit of a special option. Bold and dramatic, and most commonly seen with pipe bands and ceremonial dress. Not something you'd usually wear as a wedding guest or for everyday use, but a strong choice for pipers or anyone who wants their Highland dress to properly stand out.

Materials & Craftsmanship Spotlight

Our sporrans are made from a genuine range of materials, sealskin, rabbit fur, goat fur skin, and calfskin, so there's proper variety depending on the look and formality you want. A good number of our full dress and semi dress sporrans feature a decorative metal piece sitting at the top. It's a small touch, but it ties back to Scottish heritage and adds a bit more presence to the overall look.

Strap Style Note

Sporrans are worn either with a chain or a leather strap, and the two tend to suit different levels of formality. Chain straps generally come with full dress sporrans, giving a sharper, more formal finish. Leather straps show up more often on semi dress and casual sporrans, where a slightly relaxed look fits better.
