Jacobite & Ghillie Kilt Shirts

We've been making traditional Highland wear here in the UK for over 20 years, and the kilt shirt is one of the most requested pieces in our Highland wear accessories collection. It's a lace-up front kilt shirt, tied back to the Jacobite era of Scottish Highland dress. You will find it referred to in various ways but it will all be the same shirt, the Jacobite shirt, Ghillie shirt, the Jacobean shirt or whatever form it is given. It is crafted of 100% cotton and finished in a genuine leather lace, in eight colours.

The Lace-Up Front of a Kilt Shirt

No buttons on this one, the neckline closes with a leather lace instead, tied at the front. The fit is loose rather than fitted, which wasn't really a style choice originally, it gave Highland clansmen room to move while working. It has the most practical, everyday design carried through pretty much unchanged. 

Fabric and Quality Craftsmanship

We use 100% cotton that is breathable enough for a full day's wear without getting uncomfortable. The laces are genuine leather too, not the cloth or ribbon substitute a lot of similar shirts use, and that's usually where the quality gap shows up most.

When to Wear a Kilt Ghillie Shirt

This is not black-tie, it's semi-casual to casual. The kilt shirt should be worn exclusively with its laces tied loosely for occasions such as the “St. Andrew's Day” celebration, festivals, Highland games, reenactments, and for casual wear.

Take a step up and use it for a wedding or a ceilidh, and add a waistcoat or jacket on top and it looks nice.

Worth being upfront about one thing though, it isn't a substitute for a proper dress shirt at fully formal events. A Prince Charlie outfit usually needs a wing-collar dress shirt instead, so save the Ghillie shirt for something less formal than that.

Colours and Sizing

We have 8 colours to choose from: off-white, royal blue, brown, green, navy, sea green, white and black. Sizes are based on regular mens' sizing and if you're not certain on what to purchase, our Size Chart will guide you to select the right measurement.

Washing Care and Contact

Wash hands with a mild soap and cold water (no bleach). After washing, reshape and spread on a surface to dry instead of hanging, to ensure proper fit and laces always look correct.
