What Flashes Are Actually For

A lot of first time buyers aren't sure what flashes even do. They are placed just below the knee under your kilt socks and the garter is tucked under them to keep them in place. Otherwise, the garter would just show without any flashes which isn't exactly a polished way of completing an appropriate kilt ensemble.

We use acrylic wool for these. It's durable, easy to look after, and holds its shape and colour well, which matters for something worn regularly. Every pair is handmade, not mass produced, so the quality stays the same order after order.

Matching Your Kilt Flashes to Your Outfit

As a general rule, your flashes should match your kilt tartan. If you're in a pipe band, this matters a bit more, since many bands ask for flashes in a specific regimental or band tartan. We can match that for you if it's not something we already stock.

When you are wearing a full wedding attire including jacket, tie, and kilt then it is best to match your flash pattern to the rest of the outfit.
