Tartan Fly Plaids

A fly plaid tartan is a separate piece of tartan fabric, pre-pleated and pinned over the left shoulder so it hangs down the back. It doesn't attach to the kilt, it's worn on top of the whole outfit. It's what gives a formal Highland outfit that bit of extra presence. You'll see it worn with formal dress kilts, and it's also part of the standard dress for pipers and military pipe bands. Perfect for Occasions and Events

There are really two situations where you'd wear these plaids. The first is formal Highland dress, worn with our Prince Charlie jacket or Argyll jacket for weddings, balls, and black-tie events. The second is ceremonial or pipe band wear, where pipers and drummers wear their band's tartan.

One thing worth knowing before you buy, it isn't something you'd wear with a casual or everyday kilt. It's kept for formal and ceremonial occasions, not day to day wear.

Matching Your Fly Plaid to Your Kilt

If you wish the outfit to be coordinated, your fly plaid should be the same as that of your kilt. When wearing two different tartans together they don't always blend; they are a bit of a mismatch. Match it with your tartan kilt to complete your Highland look. 

The fly plaid, kilt and jacket should be matched together and not separately for weddings. Find these three all in one and the entire assembly works well on the day!

• We use 100% pure acrylic wool. It holds its pleats and colour well over time, and it's easier to look after than pure wool, which makes sense for something worn repeatedly at formal events.
• None of them are mass produced, they are all hand made instead. This is the way we ensure quality consistency for every order.
